3 Things Every Child Needs Before The First Bell Rings

Every August, parents race through store aisles checking off school supply lists.

Backpacks? Check.

Pencils? Check.

Notebooks? Check.

Lunchbox? Check.

But as children's ministry leaders, we have the privilege of helping children carry something no store can provide. Before the first bell rings, every child needs three things that will matter far longer than anything they'll find in a backpack.

1. They Need to Know Who They Are

Our children are walking into a world that will spend the next nine months trying to tell them who they should be.

Make better grades.

Be more popular.

Fit in.

Look different.

Try harder.

Be accepted.

If we aren't intentional, the loudest voices will shape their identity before God's voice does. Before children ever step into a classroom, they need to know they are loved by God, created with purpose, and treasured simply because they belong to Him. The greatest gift we can give them isn't confidence in themselves. It's confidence in Christ. When children know who they are in Jesus, the opinions of others lose their power.

2. They Need Courage to Live Their Faith

It's one thing to know Bible stories. It's another thing to live them. Our calling isn't simply to fill children with biblical knowledge. 

It's to prepare them to follow Jesus when they're the only Christian at the lunch table. 

When they're tempted to laugh at someone instead of love them. 

When they see a child sitting alone. 

When telling the truth costs them something. 

Children don't need more information. They need the courage to put their faith into action. Don't just teach them what Jesus said. Prepare them to live like Jesus.

3. They Need a Church That Believes in Them

Sometimes we underestimate the influence of a child. We think of them as the future church. Jesus never did. Every Sunday, we're not simply filling classrooms—we're sending disciples into schools, neighborhoods, sports teams, and friendships where many of us will never go. Never underestimate what God can do through one child who knows Jesus.

One invitation can change a life.

One act of kindness can change a classroom.

One prayer can change a family.

One child can influence an entire school.

That's why children's ministry matters so deeply. We are not entertaining children until they're old enough for "real ministry.” We are equipping today's Church to impact today's world.

Our Calling This School Year

As children head back to school, let's think beyond backpacks and bus routes.

Let's prepare hearts.

Let's speak identity.

Let's build courage.

Let's remind every child who walks through our doors that they are deeply loved by God and uniquely called by Him.

Because long after the pencils are gone...Long after the notebooks are filled...Long after report cards are forgotten...

A child who knows who they are in Christ, has the courage to live for Him, and knows their church believes in them can change the world.

This Sunday, don't just welcome children into your ministry.

Send them into their mission field.
